I am also the co-founder of The Delta Project, where my expertise in systems design helps create mentorship pipelines and opportunities for young people navigating the juvenile justice system.

My career has spanned print and broadcast journalism, media relations, criminal justice, forensic and investigative psychology, public policy, government relations, crisis and risk management, and emerging technology during one of the most consequential periods of societal transformation in modern history.
Across every domain, my focus has remained remarkably consistent: understanding how intelligence shapes power, how power shapes institutions, and how institutions shape human outcomes.
As a Professor of Practice at the University of Virginia School of Data Science and the institution’s inaugural Data Activist-in-Residence, I examine how artificial intelligence is reshaping both human experience and public life—from identity, intimacy, childhood, and grief to governance, public safety, health, justice, and the future of democratic society. My work explores what happens when technologies designed to augment intelligence begin to influence the most human aspects of being alive.
My work also examines the evolving relationship between intelligence, power, trust, legitimacy, accountability, and human agency in an era where algorithms, autonomous systems, and machine-driven authority increasingly shape decisions, institutions, and society itself.
I serve as a Nonresident Senior Fellow and Co-Director of the AI Equity Lab at Brookings and as Co-Chair of the Global Academic Network of the Center for AI and Digital Policy. I advise governments, executives, law enforcement leaders, policymakers, and public institutions confronting the opportunities and consequences of technological change.
